In Chinese, character recognition and writing are deeply connected. The more often a child sees a word, the more likely they’ll recognize it. And the more they understand a character’s structure and stroke order, the easier it is to remember how to write it.

The problem is that traditional practice tends to split these processes apart. Children recognize a word one way, then try to write it using a completely different method. When there’s no connection between the two, the learning doesn’t stick. Copying alone isn’t enough. If kids don’t understand how a character is built or why a certain stroke comes first, it’s easy to forget, even after practicing many times.
